Joe Henderson will go down in history of jazz for several reasons, including being the tenor saxophone of two of the best-selling albums in the history of the label Blue Note: The Sidewinder by Lee Morgan and Song for My Father by Horace Silver. His style reflects the synthesis of all the tradition of black tenor saxophone and is a good indication that the form is not at odds with ingenuity. During his nearly forty years of career achievement to implement a particular voice and be a sound reference imperative as in his time came to be Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane.
The importance of his contribution to jazz was as a witness this record, the first thing he recorded his name as leader and soon after that Henderson entered for the first time in a recording studio to accompany the master of the trumpet, Kenny Dorham on his album "One More" and since then did not pass unnoticed. Ojeadores the company's Blue Note he signed a contract that allowed him to be present and active in events along with other important jazz musicians staffing great seal of the select blue. So could play with Lee Morgan, Andrew Hill, Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson and McCoy Tyner among other great musicians.
But above all to Joe Henderson will be remembered for having managed to record five albums followed by an unquestionable quality: Page One, Our Thing, In'n Out, Inner Urge and Mode for Joe. Page One disc suggest that this last month of the year in Apoloybaco, beginning with two items of Dorham: Blue Bossa shows the influence of the tour that Dorham made by South America and The Mesh is a ballad dedicated to her daughter. From there the disc is from Henderson, and it shows in Homestrecht. Appraisal I, had already been composed in 1955 and Out of the Night in 1957. The disc is completed with Jinrikisha, a touch of oriental and with a spectacular McCoy Tyner on piano.
One detail: on the cover of the disc's name appears only four of the members of the group. The reason is that Tyner had a contract with Impulse and could not appear in the credits.
Do not miss this, despite having passed more than forty years since its recording, Page One is a disc intemporal, a masterpiece of a musician who had found the formula to make first-class jazz. If your partner likes jazz this is a wonderful gift for the holidays, and also just get a vinyl collector's edition.
