Hank+Williams+hankwilliamsthebiography
What's truly great about America are the country's many different regions and the musicians who made those regions special. Jazz fans know the name Hank Williams (1923-1953) but most may not know much more than that or why he was important to the growth of country music. The following BBC documentary (in five parts) should solve all that. Since it's Labor Day here in the States, set a spell, put your feet up and listen to Ol' Hank's story...

Sacramento Music Festival erases red ink with cost cuts, popular acts

The Memorial Day weekend music festival known for decades in Sacramento as the Dixieland Jazz Jubilee may have found its footing with a more diverse lineup of musicians, headliner acts and a new concert venue, organizers say.

Without releasing ticket sales amounts, producers of the Sacramento Music Festival say increases in attendance this year helped the four-day event raise $867,412 in revenue and avoid a deficit.

The festival took some risks in changing its programming and making difficult spending cuts, said Mike Testa, the event's marketing director and senior vice president of the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau.

It trimmed expenditures from $1.1 million in 2012 to just under $800,000 this year.

While the festival took in less money than last year – and far from the $2.7 million raised in 2002 – operating in the black marks a turnaround from the deficit of $132,424 that the music fair posted last year, organizers said.

"2012 was definitely a turning-point year for us," executive director Vivian Abraham said. "When we looked at where we ended up in 2012, we realized something needed to be done."

Organizers sought to broaden the festival's appeal by moving away from traditional jazz to showcase acts like Los Lobos, the East Los Angeles rock band that performed to a sold-out crowd of 3,100 at the new Roundtable on the Green venue, just south of the Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento.

How One Singer Made Four Debut Albums

The late South African vocalist Sathima Bea Benjamin is remembered as her country's greatest jazz singer, who brought deliberation and questions of identity to her music. But she only launched her own career, from the shadow of her famous husband Abdullah Ibrahim, after several false starts.

Jazz With A Jamaican Accent

In the '50s, Jamaican musicians combined Caribbean calypso and American jazz and R&B to create ska — the foundation of future developments like reggae. Now, jazz musicians are closing the circle of influence. For late summer, here are five songs inspired by the island's characteristic riddims.

JUNEAU EMPIRE

Juneau’s youngest music lovers – those in grades K-12 — have been offered a chance to attend tonight’s “Made in America” concert featuring world-renowned cellist Zuill Bailey and pianist Lara Downes at a discounted rate of $10, thanks to the Jane & Thomas B. Stewart Education Fund, part of Juneau Jazz & Classics’ Education & Outreach Program.

The concert will be held Sunday at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center at 7:30 p.m. and will feature an all-American program with works by Samuel Barber, Dave Brubeck, Leonard Bernstein and Lukas Foss.

Juneau Jazz & Classics created the education fund in 2010 in honor of two dedicated supporters, longtime local residents Tom and Jane Stewart. The fund reflects the organization’s mission to make music accessible to a broad audience of all ages and backgrounds, as well as the Stewarts’ generous spirit and involvement in the arts.

Jane Stewart, who moved to Juneau in 1945, was involved in multiple aspects of the arts community, as a musician and as an organizer. In addition to teaching music for nearly 40 years and helping to promote music in the schools, she had a hand in the founding of many arts groups, including Juneau-Douglas Little Theater in the 1950s, Juneau Lyric Opera in the 1970s, and Juneau Jazz and Classics, founded by Linda Rosenthal in 1985. She also served on the state arts council and Juneau arts council, and helped create the One Percent for Arts program. Mother to seven children, she died in 2002 at age 82.

The event is a celebration of jazz music and includes free entertainment from local, regional, and national jazz artists.

Jazz isn't the only attraction however. The festival also features specially brewed beer.

Students who performed talked about sharing the stage to make the music come alive.
