Barbara Dennerlein ....

Every year jazz musicians from Hannover come together to honor the legendary jazz fan and city marketing manager Mike Gehrke who passed away 11 years ago. The Society of the Friends of Jazz invited not only musicians who live in this city but also from outside for the "Jazz in June" concert on June 12 in the Market Church. Barbara Dennerlein, the awarded "First Lady of the Church organ", was among the artists.

In 2001, when Mike Gehrke initiated the "Jazz and Church Organ" contest, he asked the  Munich-based musician to become member of the jury. Skilled after several years of jazz concerts on pipe organs since 1994, Barbara at that time was going to prepare for her first jazz pipe organ CD "Spiritual Movement No. 1".

In this year, three CD's and uncounted concerts later, Barbara Dennerlein took part in this concert evening - to be exact: two parts: the opening and the finale. The intermediate parts were performances of Herbert Christ (trumpet) and Fraser Gartshore (organ) and the Stephan Abel Quartet with singer Tokunbo Akinro.

The huge interest in the concert - much more tickets were sold than in the last years, the promoters said - was impressive and motivating for the artists, especially regarding the nice summer weather outside. You can find photos from this event on the "Friends of Jazz" website:
